There’s a new outgrowth of meditation these days. It’s called Meditative Story, and it’s for all ages.
Story envelops our lives day in and day out. It is an ancient narrative communication that has been passed down from the beginning of time. Our brains as humans are drawn to story, and some people say we look for it as a form of safety and familiarity throughout our days. Whether we want to admit it or not, the ancient concepts of story are everywhere.
And meditation is no different. All meditations follow a story, whether we know it or not. Even a body scan is a story with a beginning, middle and ending! If you have ever done a yoga class yourself, you are probably somewhat aware of the story a yoga teacher leads you through.
But what is Meditative Story?
1) Calming - Meditative Story is firstly a meditation. Children are calm, safe and comfortable, and we keep the story relaxed (not a lot of fear, suspense or urgency).
2) Reflective - Story works by creating personal connections with the characters, so we use prompts to further reflection. For kids, these prompts can remain relatively simple, like positive affirmations, explorations of emotions, or other concepts like forgiveness.
3) Connective - Kids listen to the experiences in the story and naturally identify some part of their own experience that rhymes—emotionally and spiritually. This is an incredible opportunity for kids to feel and enhance their connection with self, others, and Earth.
For kids, Meditative Story, is a favourite for many reasons:
1) It’s easy to understand. Story is how we make sense of our world. Kids love it because it organizes information in a digestible way.
2) It’s about connection. Through story, we connect to characters with shared experiences, and feel less alone.
3) It’s relaxing. Our kids are tired and often are looking for rest. Being left alone with a calm story is often bliss for them!
We have Story Meditations for all ages in our Virtual Studio - join us to check them out!
